What Is a Pet Portrait Canvas?

§ 01

A pet portrait canvas is a photograph of your animal printed onto artist’s canvas and stretched over a wooden frame. What separates ours is what happens before the printer: a person opens your file, corrects the eye-shine, recovers detail in a dark coat, straightens the crop and removes the leash if you ask — then it prints on cotton–polyester canvas with archival pigment ink and is sealed under a UV-blocking satin coat.

Every portrait is retouched, printed, stretched and packed in Canada. Sixteen sizes, two frame depths, free delivery to all ten provinces and three territories, and a lifetime warranty against fading, cracking, warping and peeling. Most orders leave the studio within one business day of you approving the proof.

How to Choose the Best Photo for a Pet Canvas

A phone photo taken with these in mind beats a professional camera used badly. If yours misses one of them, send it anyway — we will tell you honestly what we can and cannot fix.

Eyes in focus

Everything else can be corrected. Focus cannot. If the eyes are sharp in the original, the portrait works; if they are soft, no amount of retouching brings them back.

Soft daylight, not flash

Window light or open shade renders fur as texture. Direct sun blows out white coats and on-camera flash produces the green retinal shine we then have to paint out.

Down at their level

A camera held at standing height flattens the face and shows mostly the top of a head. Kneel, or put the phone on the floor. It is the single change that most improves a dog photo.

Fill the frame

Head and shoulders should occupy most of the picture. A small animal in a big room has to be enlarged to print, and enlargement is what turns fur into mush.

Retouching § 03

Custom Pet Canvas Retouching

Not a filter and not an algorithm. Every pet portrait is opened by a retoucher, and you see a proof before anything reaches the printer.

Be honest in the copy: if any of these are actually chargeable extras in your WooCommerce setup, change the tag. Advertising a free service that is billed later is exactly what the Competition Act’s deceptive-marketing provisions cover.

The frame § 04

Pet Canvas Frame Depths

Both are kiln-dried white pine from FSC-approved forests, finger-spliced so the bar cannot twist as a Canadian winter dries the air out of a room.

Cross-section of the standard frame: a canvas wrapped over a 2 centimetre pine bar, seen from the side against a wall ¾″ · 2 cm Wall Standard

¾″ — 2 cm

Sits close to the wall and stays light. The right choice for small and mid-size portraits, and for a wall where several canvases hang together as a group.

Cross-section of the extra-large frame: a canvas wrapped over a 4 centimetre pine bar, seen from the side against a wall 1½″ · 4 cm Wall Extra large

1½″ — 4 cm

The gallery depth. The canvas stands off the wall and throws a shadow line, which is what makes a large portrait read as a piece of art rather than an enlarged photo.

Reconcile before publishing: this page states ¾″ as standard and 1½″ as the upgrade, taken from your current copy. The homepage draft describes 1½″ as standard. Decide which is true and make both pages agree — conflicting product facts across a site is a trust signal Google weighs.

Shape § 05

Pet Canvas Sizes & Cropping

The commonest surprise in pet printing is an ear or a tail leaving the frame. Pick a shape and drag the framing to see exactly what a given proportion keeps.

A cat photographed at eye level in soft daylight, used here to demonstrate how different canvas proportions crop the same picture
Shape

Square — keeps 67% of the original photograph.

Close-cropped around the head. Check that both ear tips stay inside the red frame.

Note: this is a demonstration on a sample photograph. In the real designer you crop your own upload, and a retoucher checks the framing again before printing.

Plate 02 Square wrap — hand-retouched from a phone photograph

A good share of the portraits leaving this studio are of animals who have already died. You do not have to explain that to us when you order, and we will not send you a cheerful marketing email afterwards.

Send whatever photograph you have, even if it is a bad one — a phone snapshot, a scan of a print from a shoebox, a frame paused out of a video. Our retouchers repair blur, creases, fading and low resolution by hand. If a file genuinely will not carry the size you want, we will tell you that before you pay, and suggest a size that works, rather than printing something soft and letting you find out when it arrives. Mention it in the order notes if you would like the collar or the leash left in; for a lot of people that detail is the point.

Confirm this section reads true. It describes a proof-before-print process and a no-upsell posture. If that is not how your team actually handles memorial orders, change the words — this is the part of the page a grieving customer will hold you to.

Pet Portrait Canvas FAQ

What kind of photo works best for a pet portrait canvas?

The single most important thing is that the eyes are sharp. Beyond that: shoot in soft daylight rather than direct sun or flash, get the camera down to your animal’s eye level instead of pointing down at them, and fill the frame so the head and shoulders occupy most of the picture. A phone photo taken this way will out-print a professional camera used badly. Aim for roughly 100 pixels per inch of finished canvas — about 1600×2000 pixels for a 16×20 inch print.

Can you remove the leash, collar or background from my pet’s photo?

Yes. Leash and collar removal, background simplification and distracting-object removal are done by hand on request at no extra charge. Colour, crop, exposure and eye-shine correction are done free on every order without being asked. If a request is beyond what retouching can do, we will tell you before printing rather than after.

My dog is black — will the detail show on canvas?

Yes, provided the original photo holds some detail in the coat. Black and very dark coats lose detail when the camera exposes for a bright background, so photograph a dark animal against a mid-toned or dark background in soft, even light. Our retoucher lifts the shadows by hand before printing, and the matte-leaning UV satin coat we use holds shadow separation far better than a gloss finish.

How long does a pet portrait canvas take to arrive in Canada?

Pet portraits are retouched, printed and stretched within one business day. Delivery then takes roughly 2 to 3 business days in Ontario, Quebec and the Prairies, 3 to 5 business days to British Columbia and Atlantic Canada, and up to 7 business days to Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Delivery is free on every order.

Can I put more than one pet on the same canvas?

Yes. Several animals can be combined onto one canvas, either as a single scene or as a multi-photo layout. If your pets have never been photographed together, send separate photos and our team will compose them into one portrait.

Do you make memorial portraits from an old or low-quality photo?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. Send whatever you have, including a phone snapshot, a scan of a printed photo or a video still. Our retouchers repair blur, scratches, discolouration and low resolution by hand, and we show you a proof before anything is printed. If a file genuinely cannot carry the size you want, we will say so and suggest a size that works.

What sizes do pet portrait canvases come in?

Fifty-five sizes are currently available across eight aspect ratios, from 8 × 8 inches to 60 × 40 inches. Options include square, portrait, landscape and panoramic proportions. For a single animal, a canvas at least 40 cm (16 inches) on its longest side keeps the face at a natural scale.

Is the canvas safe around pets and children?

Yes. We print with solvent-free inks and seal every canvas with a water-based UV-blocking satin coat, so there is no solvent odour and nothing off-gasses in the room. There is no glass to break, which is the usual reason framed photographs are unsuitable in a home with animals or small children.
