How to make a custom canvas print from your own photo
A custom canvas print is your own photograph printed onto artist’s canvas and stretched over a wooden frame, ready to hang with no glass and no picture frame. Ours are made in Canada in 55 sizes, from $45.
Three things happen after you order, and only one of them is your job. Most people are done in about five minutes — the part that takes longest is choosing between two photographs.
Send the picture
Pick the shape that matches your file, choose a size, then upload. JPEG, PNG, HEIC or TIFF, straight from a phone or a camera. The crop is done on screen, so you see what stays in.
A person checks it
Every file is opened and measured against the size ordered before it reaches a printer. Too small and you hear about it by email, with the largest size it will carry, rather than finding out on your wall.
It prints and ships
Printed with pigment ink, sealed with UV satin coat, stretched over kiln-dried pine by hand and packed the same day. Free delivery, every province and territory, hardware already fitted.
Custom canvas print sizes and prices in Canada
Fifty-five sizes in eight shapes, $45 to $520, every price including free delivery. Choose the shape that matches your photograph first, then the size. The room below is drawn to scale — a real 12 ft wall and a real 84″ three-seat sofa — so a 24 × 16″ looks exactly as small as it is going to look.
Every figure above is the live price from the Custom Canvas product page, checked on 21 September 2026. It covers the print, the gallery wrap, the pine frame, the satin coat, the hanging hardware and delivery anywhere in Canada. The only paid extra is an optional external frame in white or black at +$200.
What size canvas should I get?
The rule framers use is two-thirds. Whatever the canvas hangs above — a sofa, a bed, a sideboard — measure that piece of furniture and aim for roughly two-thirds of its width in art.
- Over an 84″ three-seat sofa — aim for 50 to 60″ of canvas
- Over a queen bed (60″) — 36 to 45″ sits right
- In a hallway or on a stair wall — 12 to 20″ reads better up close
- On its own on a big wall — go bigger than feels comfortable. Nobody regrets it.

Canvas wrap edges explained: Mirror, Blur, Fill and White
The edge is the decision people get wrong. A gallery wrap has four sides you never think about until the canvas is on the wall and half of somebody’s head is round the back. Here are the four finishes on one photograph, so you can see what each one costs you before you choose.
Mirror
The outside band of your picture is flipped and wrapped around the sides.
Nothing on the front face is lost. This is the one to pick when a head, a hand or a horizon sits close to the edge of the frame.
If you remember one thing: Fill is the only option that eats part of your photograph. It borrows about an inch and a half from each side, which is fine for sky and grass and a disaster for a group shot where somebody is standing at the edge.
Canvas depth: ¾″ standard or 1½″ gallery wrap
Then pick how far off the wall it stands. This is the thickness of the wooden stretcher bar behind the canvas, and it changes how the piece reads from across a room more than most people expect.
¾″
StandardSits close to the wall. Keeps a small canvas light, and it is the right choice when several hang together as a set, because the shallow bars let them line up cleanly.
1½″
GalleryStands proud and throws a shadow line underneath. That shadow is what makes a large canvas read as a piece of art rather than an enlarged photograph. Past about 30″ wide, take it.
Canvas Roll
UnstretchedThe same print on the same canvas, shipped rolled in a tube with no frame. For people who want to stretch it themselves, are framing it behind glass, or are posting it overseas.
What photo resolution do you need for a canvas print?
Aim for 100 pixels for every finished inch of canvas — so divide your photo’s pixel width by 100 and that is the widest print it fills cleanly. Will my photo actually be big enough is the question behind almost every email we get before an order, so put your file’s dimensions in below and it will tell you. Nothing is uploaded; the arithmetic happens in your browser.
Plenty to work with
40 × 30″
The largest canvas this file fills at our full 100 pixels-per-inch standard.
Sizes this file will print well at
Between 75 and 100 pixels per inch still prints well, because the weave of the canvas hides a little softness in a way that glossy paper does not. Below 75 you will see it from the sofa, and we will email you before it goes on a printer.
Photos that print beautifully on canvas
- The original off the camera roll. Not the one you posted, not the one you texted.
- Anything shot in daylight. Even an old phone does well with enough light.
- Scans at 600 dpi or more if you are copying an old print.
- HEIC straight from an iPhone. No need to convert it first.
Photos that cause trouble
- Anything out of WhatsApp or Messenger. They compress hard, sometimes to 1000 px. Ask for the original.
- Screenshots of photos. A screenshot is the size of your screen, not the size of the picture.
- Images saved off a website. Usually a few hundred pixels, and usually not yours to print.
- Heavy digital zoom. Cropping in afterwards on the full file beats zooming at the time.
How a custom canvas print is made
Your photograph passes through six pairs of hands before it reaches a wall, and none of them are in another country. The file is opened here, printed here, stretched here and boxed here, which is the only reason a canvas ordered on a Tuesday can be on a wall in Winnipeg by Thursday.
- The file is opened and measuredAgainst the size you ordered, by a person. Too small and you get an email, not a refund request later.
- Printed with solvent-free HP pigment inkOn HP-certified machines. No solvent smell in the room when you unwrap it, which matters in a nursery.
- Onto acid-free cotton–polyester canvasMuseum grade. It takes ink without bleeding into the weave, and it will not yellow behind the image.
- Sealed with a UV-blocking satin coatSprayed over the whole surface. This is the layer that stops a sunlit south wall bleaching the picture out.
- Stretched over kiln-dried white pineFSC-approved timber, finger-spliced and dried so the bar cannot twist when a Canadian winter takes the humidity out of a room.
- Stapled on the back, never the sidesSo the edge stays clean from every angle. Hardware is fitted before it is corner-protected and boxed.
How to hang a canvas print
Hang the centre of the canvas 57 inches from the floor, span about two thirds of the furniture below it, and leave six to ten inches of wall in between. A canvas hung an inch too high looks wrong and nobody can say why; these three measurements are what galleries use, and none of them needs more than a tape measure.
Centre at 57 inches
Not the top, the centre. Fifty-seven inches from the floor is average standing eye level and it is what every gallery hangs to. Most people hang too high by about a foot.
Two thirds of the furniture
Over a sofa, a bed or a sideboard, the art should span roughly two thirds of the width below it, with a hand’s width — six to ten inches — of wall between them. An 84″ sofa wants about 56″ of canvas.
A group is one picture
Hanging several together? Leave two to three inches between them and then treat the whole block as a single piece — centre that at 57 inches. Tight, even gaps are what make a group read as deliberate.
What turns up in the box
Every canvas arrives stretched, wired and ready. The hanging hardware is already fitted to the back of the frame, so it goes up with one hook and a spirit level — no framing shop, no extra trip to the hardware store.
- Hardware fitted to the frame
- Corner-protected, boxed flat
- No frame to buy, ever
Canvas print delivery across Canada, free to every province
Free to every postal code, including the ones nobody else ships to. No minimum order, no rural surcharge, and no “excluding the territories” buried in the small print. Two to three business days across Ontario, Quebec and the Prairies, three to five to British Columbia and Atlantic Canada, up to seven to the territories. Your canvas is made in Canada, so it never crosses a border and there is no duty or brokerage fee at the other end.
What we guarantee on every custom canvas print
We look at the file before we print it
A person opens every upload and checks the resolution against the size ordered. If it will not carry that size you get an email with the largest one it will, before anything is charged to a printer.
Damaged in transit means a reprint, not a claim form
Send a photo of the box and the canvas. A replacement goes into production the same day at no cost, and the original stays with you.
The warranty has no end date
Fading, cracking, warping and peeling are covered for as long as the canvas is on your wall. Not twelve months. Not five years. As long as you own it.
Custom canvas prints: your questions answered
The thirteen things people email us before they order, answered without evasion. If yours is not here, ask us before you buy.
How do I make a custom canvas print from my own photo?
Open the Custom Canvas product page, pick the shape that matches your photograph, choose a size and a wrap, then upload the file. The upload happens in the browser and accepts JPEG, PNG, HEIC and TIFF. Before anything prints, a person opens the file and checks it against the size you ordered. If it is sharp enough it goes straight into production, usually the same day.
What resolution does my photo need to be for a canvas print?
Divide the pixel width of your photo by 100. That number, in inches, is the widest canvas it will fill cleanly. A 3000-pixel-wide file makes a comfortable 30-inch canvas. Between 75 and 100 pixels per inch still prints well on canvas because the weave hides a little softness. Below 75 you will see it, and we will email you before charging ahead.
Can I use a photo from my phone?
Almost always, yes. A recent iPhone or Android photo is around 4000 pixels on the long edge, which is enough for a 40-inch canvas. The files that cause trouble are ones that have been through a messaging app. WhatsApp and Messenger compress photos hard, sometimes down to 1000 pixels. Send the original from the camera roll, or ask whoever took it to AirDrop or email the full-size version.
What are Mirror, Blur, Fill and White edges?
They are the four ways the sides of the canvas can be finished, and it is the choice people get wrong most often. Mirror reflects the outer band of the picture around the sides, so nothing on the front is lost. Blur softens that same band. Fill carries the photograph itself around the edge, which uses up about an inch and a half of the image. White leaves the sides plain. If a face is near the edge of your photo, choose Mirror or White.
Should I order the three-quarter inch or the inch-and-a-half depth?
That is the thickness of the wooden bar behind the canvas. Three-quarter inch sits close to the wall and suits smaller pieces and sets hung side by side. Inch-and-a-half stands proud and casts a shadow line, which is what makes a big canvas look like art rather than an enlargement. Past about 30 inches wide, the deeper bar is worth it.
How much does a custom canvas print cost in Canada?
From $45 for an 8 by 8 inch up to $520 for a 60 by 40 inch, across 55 sizes in eight shapes. The price covers the printing, the gallery wrap, the pine stretcher frame, the UV satin coat and the hanging hardware. Shipping is free anywhere in Canada with no minimum order. The one paid extra is an optional external frame in white or black at $200.
Can you crop, straighten or fix the colour in my photo?
The cropping to your chosen shape happens on screen while you order, so you see exactly what is kept. Small corrections are part of the job: we straighten a tilted horizon, lift a dark exposure and remove a colour cast without being asked. Anything larger, like removing an object or restoring a damaged print, needs a note with your order so we can tell you whether it is possible first.
Will the canvas look exactly like my screen?
Close, but not identical, and that is physics rather than printing. A screen makes colour with light and a canvas reflects it, so the very brightest and most saturated tones on a phone display cannot be matched with ink on cloth. Deep blacks lift slightly and neon colours settle down. Everything else, including skin tones, lands where you expect.
How long does a custom canvas take to arrive?
Printing, stretching and packing is normally done inside one business day. After that, expect 2 to 3 business days across Ontario, Quebec and the Prairies, 3 to 5 to British Columbia and Atlantic Canada, and up to 7 to Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Everything is made and shipped inside Canada, so nothing waits at a border.
Does it arrive ready to hang?
Yes. The canvas is stretched, the staples are on the back rather than the sides, and the hanging hardware is already fitted. Take it out of the box, put a screw in the wall and hang it. Nothing needs assembling and no frame shop is involved.
Can I change or cancel an order after I place it?
Only for a short window, because production starts quickly. Email us within a couple of hours and we can usually swap the size, the wrap or the file. Once it is on the printer the canvas has been cut to your dimensions and cannot go back into stock.
What if I don't like it when it arrives?
REPLACE — state your actual policy here, in plain words. Because every custom canvas is cut and printed to one person's order, most printers limit returns to manufacturing faults rather than change of mind, and that is a perfectly defensible position. What is not defensible is leaving it vague. This is the question that decides the order for a first-time customer, and silence costs you the sale more often than an honest no would.
Can I order several canvases as a set?
Yes, and it is worth planning the set before you order rather than after. Pick one shape and stay with it, use the same wrap on every piece, and keep the three-quarter inch depth so they sit flat together. For larger runs, our trade programme handles volume pricing.
