How much is sales tax on a canvas print in Edmonton?

Edmonton pays 5% federal GST and nothing else. No Canadian city charges its own sales tax on top of the provincial rate, and Edmonton is no exception — the figure here is the same 5% you would pay in Red Deer or Grande Prairie. Edmonton conditions

Edmonton cold is the steady kind, and that changes the care

Southern Alberta gets the Chinook — a twenty-degree swing inside an afternoon that cycles a wooden frame loose and tight all winter. Edmonton sits north of that belt and rarely gets the relief, which sounds worse and is actually easier on a canvas. What you get instead is a long, stable, deep cold, and with it the driest indoor air of the year: a heated Edmonton house in January can sit near fifteen percent relative humidity.

What to do about it. Steady cold means steady tension. Your canvas will draw tight in November and stay tight until spring, rather than pumping loose and tight the way a Calgary one does. Leave the tensioning keys alone all winter. If it still looks slack in June, when the wood has taken moisture back on, that is the moment to use them.

Where should you hang a canvas in an Edmonton home?

At 53.5° north Edmonton is the northernmost metropolitan area of its size in North America, and the practical result is the widest seasonal light swing of any major Canadian city. Around the winter solstice you get roughly seven and a half hours between sunrise and sunset, all of it at a low angle. Around the summer solstice you get about seventeen, and dusk never fully arrives.

The practical rule. That low winter sun reaches much further into a south-facing room than summer sun does, so the safe spot in July is not the safe spot in January. Hang a canvas on a wall the winter sun cannot rake across directly, and it will never see the worst of either season. Our inks are rated against fading for the life of the print, but no pigment likes a daily hour of direct sun.

The river valley, the bridge, and the aurora

Edmonton files come to us from the North Saskatchewan valley more than anywhere else — the ravines in October, the skyline from Saskatchewan Drive, the High Level Bridge, the legislature grounds under snow. After that it is the aurora from somewhere dark north or east of the city, and bison at Elk Island. It is a river-and-sky city, and the photographs show it.

Which shape suits it

A skyline across the valley is a horizontal subject and the standard 3:2 crops the ends off it. The 2:1 and 3:1 ratios are the ones that hold a river-valley panorama, and a 30×15″ or a 40×13″ above a sofa carries it without dominating the wall. Aurora frames are the opposite — they want vertical room for the sky, so turn the canvas on its end.

What we guarantee on every order to Edmonton

01

We check the file before we print it

A person opens every upload and measures the resolution against the size ordered. Too small and you get an email with the largest size it will carry, before anything is charged.

02

Damaged in transit means a reprint

Photograph the box and the canvas and a replacement goes into production the same day at no cost. You keep the original.

03

The warranty has no end date

Fading, cracking, warping and peeling are covered for as long as the canvas is on your wall — which, in this climate, is the clause that earns its keep.

Will an Edmonton winter damage a canvas print?

Southern Alberta gets the Chinook — a twenty-degree swing inside an afternoon that cycles a wooden frame loose and tight all winter. Edmonton sits north of that belt and rarely gets the relief, which sounds worse and is actually easier on a canvas. What size canvas suits an Edmonton living room?

Size to the furniture rather than to the wall. Whatever the canvas hangs above wants roughly two thirds of its width in art, so a standard 84 inch sofa takes 50 to 60 inches of canvas and a 60 inch sideboard takes about 40. Hang the bottom edge six to eight inches above the furniture.

What resolution does my photo need?

About 100 pixels for every finished inch, so divide the pixel width of your file by 100 and that is the widest canvas it fills cleanly. A recent phone photo around 4000 pixels wide comfortably makes a 40 inch print. If a file will not carry the size you ordered we email you before anything is printed.

Is there a Save on Canvas shop in Edmonton?

No — Save on Canvas is an online studio, not a retail shop, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect. You upload the photograph, choose the size and the edge treatment on the website, and the finished canvas is delivered to your Edmonton address. Free shipping applies to orders of $250 CAD or more; shipping charges may apply below $250 and are shown at checkout.

Do you deliver outside Edmonton to the rest of Alberta?

Yes, we deliver across Alberta and to every other province and territory. Free shipping applies to orders of $250 CAD or more; shipping charges may apply below $250 and are displayed at checkout. Transit outside the metro area runs a little longer — the Alberta page has the province-wide picture.

Delivering elsewhere in Alberta

Free shipping applies to orders of $250 CAD or more across Canada. For orders below $250, shipping charges may apply and are displayed at checkout. Transit outside the metro runs a little longer; the price of the canvas does not change.
